Gen. Sun Li-jen Residence

SINCE 1907

The process of urban development is a discourse between space and culture. The historical building of this city, General Sun Li-Jen Residence, was built by the Japanese architect, Moriyama Matzunosuke in the late Meiji period. This composite of distinctive Western and Japanese styles in one place is the epitome of the conflict and fusion of different cultures as well as the vehicle of historical trajectory and context. It was built outside the southern corner of the then Taipei Citadel and has stood for over a century. It has quietly observed the changing of the seasons and now awaits visitors with grace and elegance.

ABOUT US

Three centuries ago, hopeful Christopher Columbus led his crew from Spain to explore the great unknown. Thus, a dazzling bright modern culture unfolded and changed the world forever.

Artgo Cultural and Creative Co., established in 2017, employs diversified cultural heritages to promote cultural creativeness in conjunction with modern technology and marketing strategies.

Cultural creativeness interprets cultures in daily lives and raises the living quality of life with cultures. Our strong team strives to create new perspectives on historical buildings and sites. General Sun Li-jen Residence is the first historical building we manage. Employing creativity as the catalyst, we hope to fuse culture and life to a higher level. By offering artistic and cultural activities in historical buildings, we cultivate a leisure space in which people socialize and dine with a touch of sophistication.

On the other hand, the maintenance and promotion of historic relics is such a huge undertaking that both attention and support from the government and general public are needed to make this task sustaining and robust. Therefore, the professional Artgo team designs and displays different compartmentalized spaces to preserve their individual historical integrities and meanings while people enjoy delicacies.

The renaissance of historical heritages requires the government, the general public, and cooperates to work together to create revenue and revitalize the sites. Carrying the mission of searching for the New World of creative culture, Artgo Creative and Cultural takes advantage of the diversified Taiwanese cultural heritage to manifest a wider range of cultural values by enticing the general public’s participation to stimulate economics and create more job possibilities. By actualizing our core model that “cultural creativeness interprets cultures in daily lives and raises the living quality of life with cultures,” we endeavor to pass down our cultural heritage to posterity.

FOOD

The General’s Residence brings authentic Chinese cuisine to Chengnan – the old town area around the southern Zhongzheng and Daan districts of Taipei City. The Army General’s beloved home cuisines and specialties are served in a pleasant setting.

Chef Xia’s cuisine has been served to many Army Commanders-in-chief and senior generals, and he has the reputation of being the mystical master chef of the Taiwan Army Club (The predecessor of the General Sun Li-Jen Residence). These cuisines manifest Master Chef Xia Shao-Qing’s forty years of culinary experience in an elegant historical dining environment. Chef Xia’s cuisine is rooted in the teachings of his master, Chef Chiu Ping-Shing, a renowned authority on Hangzhou cuisine in Taiwan.

SPACE

✿VIP Room

According to the original Japanese blueprint, this was designed to be a conference room and the only room with a high ceiling. After WWII, this became an important reception area and the living room of the Commander’s residence. During General Sun’s occupancy (1948-1955), he received the Legion of Merit from the first US Ambassador, John Leighton Stuart, on behalf of President Roosevelt.

✿RuYi Room

Sitting in the biggest hall of the building, one has the best view of the luxurious garden in the backyard. As the guest room during the Commander’s occupancy, it was a big room in Japanese architectural style. After renovation, other than the biggest dining hall, this can also serve as a lecture hall or an exhibition space.

✿Ji Siang Room

With direct access to the beautiful outdoor, this room is decorated with an opulent chandelier. It was the living room during the Commander’s occupancy. The central living-room fireplace is located in now preparation station in the next room. Photographs of this room taken during the Japanese era revealed the grandiosity of this residence. The European architectural style and imposing decorations compliment and signify the high social status of the occupants.

✿Greenhouse

This beautiful sunroom filled with vibrant and energetic plants is the new addition during the renovation (2010-2016). This green architecture is equipped with electronic covering to minimize direct bright sun rays when necessary. In addition, a separate water tank full of collected rainwater pumps and recycles water up to the glass roof to cool down the glasshouse and save electricity. The transparency of the glass merges trees and large plants living outdoor with mostly araceae (arums) and ferns indoors into one coherent space.

✿Artgo Café & Bookstore

Situated within the Japanese section of the General Sun Li-jen Residence, it was the research center when this building was first built for the head of the Water Supply Division of the Civic Department. Since it was the place storing all the maps, materials, and books for planning the water pipes, it was essentially the first library of the Japanese era.

Strolling down this hundred-year-old corridor filled with nice woody fragrance that exudes elegant Japanese sentiment, one seems to go back in time. Other than exquisite Japanese Governor grade delicacy, one can even rent Japanese traditional clothing, enjoy geisha’s performances, and attend Japanese cultural activities. We offer a comprehensive and immersed Japanese cultural experience from dining to all sorts of cultural activities.
